Improved Strategic Alignment

Situation

A hospital Board wanted a better way to align CEO performance with their new strategic plan so that they could track not only activity generated, but the impact and success of the new plan.

Action

Chrysalis Group developed a framework for selecting the elements of the strategic plan that most required the CEO’s attention and then determined the annual and longer term performance measures that captured the progress and impact necessary to meet the hospital’s vision. The framework provided the backdrop from which we developed a comprehensive online CEO evaluation survey to be completed by all Board members and we also recommended an approach for gathering feedback from important external partners. The new performance management framework provided for evidence-based decision making on performance accomplishments, comprehensive leader feedback and a consistent year-over-year planning and goal setting methodology.

Provided Third Party Objectivity

Situation

A healthcare Board determined they did not have an objective way to evaluate CEO annual performance and leadership. Current Board members came from diverse constituencies and had very different ideas about what leadership and results were necessary for success.

Action

Chrysalis Group worked with a special committee of the Board along with the CEO to agree on a 360 approach to performance management. Feedback from not only the Board, but also direct reports and external partners, provided a balanced view of performance accomplished and leadership. The 360 approach also gave the CEO a voice in the process by providing a structured self-assessment. The self-assessment report served to better inform and align Board members by providing specific evidence of accomplishments and successes.
